‘PEACE NOT SECURE’
UNITED JMATIONS DE VALERA CRITICAL EIRE MAKING PROGRESS (11 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 28. Little hope that the United Nations will secure world peace is entertained by Mr. Eamon de Valera, former Prime Minister of Eire, who declares himself in favour of a smaller international body willing to work for peace. He told interviewers that the United Nations appeared to lack the spirit of co-operation. Mr. de Valera said that though he desired to see an end of partition in Ireland this was not the primary cause of his visit to Australia. Ireland was making good the wastage of past years and was plannin b to build up a balanced economy between agriculture and manufacture. Because exports were primarily agricultural it was difficult for Eire to build up a reciprocal trade with Australia and New Zealand, but Eire desired to increase such trade, particularly i n wheat and wool. Discussing the possibility of Irish migration to Australia, he said that Ireland was anxious to keep its people at home
