AS BAD AS IN BRITAIN
N.Z. HOUSING SHORTAGE (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. It had amazed him to find such a housing shortage in New Zealand, said Lord Beveridge in Christchurch today. He had seen reports showing just how badly some New Zealand families were housed, and he would say that, allowing for the fact that New Zealand towns were less crowded, had not suffered war damage and did not have to put up with so much grime and smoke, conditions were as bad in extreme cases as they were in Britain. “It is tragic,” he said, “that there arc 25,000 people waiting in Britain for passages to New Zealand. If shipping could be provided it would strengthen the tics between the two countries.”
