RUGBY SELECTORS

SERVICES APPRECIATED P.B. REAPPOINTMENTS HOPES OF REP. GAMES The appointment of the senior selectors and consideration of possible representative engagements for the season formed the principal business of the management committee of the P.B. Rugby Union at its meeting on Monday evening. The selectors of last season’s successful representatives, Messrs F. Solomon (forward and J. Gillespie tback), were reappointed. A former Auckland representative forward, Mr. Solomon was an All Black in 1931 and 1932. Mr. Gillespie has represented both Canterbury and Wellington in the three-quarter line. Both have maintained close contact with the administration of the game and, as indicated during the committee discussion, their judgment in the choice of players and ability in coaching exercised a big influence in last season s successful playing record. As a result of the discussion of possible representative matches the delegates to the annual conference of the N.Z. union to be held in Wellington on May 5 were requested, with a view to the benefit to the game in the district, to arrange for as many as possible on the Poverty Bay grounds, besides the contemplated programme of up to four matches in the South Island if a Ranfurly Shield contest can be included. It' was pointed out that the Bush union had indicated last year the possibility of visiting Poverty Bay this season. Engagements which could be definitely expected at present would be the home and home matches with East. Coast and the return of last season's visit to Poverty Bay of the Bay of Plenty union. It was decided to invite the Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) sub-union to play the Gisborne representatives on the Gisborne ground on the King’s Birthday holiday, June 7, and to ofler to send the Gisborne junior side to play in Wairoa on the same day. A letter received from the P.B. Referees’ Association expressed agreement with the suggestion made at the previous meeting of the union committee that the union be given delegate representation on the association. There were present at the meeting Messrs. M. H. Beuth (chairman), J. O’Neill. R. Huston. E. Felton, R. Callaghan, B. Dodge. J. Smith, K. F. Jones, T. W. McGuffiie, F. J. Baillie, L. Lament, and W. S. McKee (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr. C. Mills.
