SHIP DESERTION
MEASURES IN SYDNEY GAOL AND DEPORTATION SYDNEY, April 23. Five British seamen were sentenced to six months’ gaol with hard labour for being prohibited immigrants. The men had deserted their ships and had failed to pass a dictation test in French. They will be deported. The action followed an order yesterday to the Customs immigration officials by the Minister of Immigration, Mr. Calwell, that ‘‘all seamen, irrespective of race or nationality, who desert ships offend against the laws of Australia and are to be charged as prohibited immigrants.”, The only exceptions to the _ new policy are seamen born or domiciled in Australia.
