LAND SALES OFFICIAL
3 YEARS’ GAOL SERVED WAS P.M.’S DELEGATE CANBERRA, April 23. A man who was sentenced in 1940 to three years’ gaol on 10 or 11 charges of forging, uttering and false pretences had been acting until Wednesday as the Prime Minister’s personal delegate in the Sydney land sales control office, said Mr. H. Beale (Liberal), in the House of Representatives. The Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, did not reply to the charge in the House, but circulated a written reply to an earlier question by Mr. Beale admitting that a man with such a record had acted as delegate and stating that he was not now in that position. The reply said that the man applied for telnporary employment and was appointed to work in the land sales control office, for which his known qualifications appeared to fit him. Staff shortages had prevented an accurate check of the records of applicants and the man’s conuct in the R.A.A-F. was known to be good.
