RED BANDS ARRESTED
SEIZURE OF WEAPONS SKIRMISHES IN ITALY (11 a.m.) ROME. April 23. Carabinieri were rushed to Kastelli Romani area near Rome on Thursday night and arrested several Communists on charges of preparing punitive expeditions. They found a number of assorted weapons. Terrified residents had barricaded themselves in homes and churches. Skirmishes and arrests of Communists are also reported in Artena, Russiano, near Naples, and Trieste. The Italian Government, despite its election victory, is still nervous of a possible outbreak by the defeated Popular Front and, as a precaution, the ban on open-air public meetings is to continue. says the Daily Telegraph’s correspondent in Rome. Even the Christian Democrats will not be allowed to celebrate their triumph, except in closed halls. Uniforms of any kind are also forbidden.
