HORROR FILMS
BARRED IN AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, April 23. No more horror films will be licensed for public screening in Australia. This decision was announced by the Chief Commonwealth Film Censor, Mr. J. O. Alexander. The films already registered are not affected, but it is understood that legislation is well advanced in all States, except New South Wales, for rigid control of these. In New South Wales a draft bill is being considered. “This type of film has no cultural or entertainment value,” said Mr. Alexander. "Its appeal is only to a limited section of the community whose mental outlook should not be fed with films of this nature. “In addition, such films are a potential danger to women in a delicate state of "health.” It is understood that thrillers, underworld and gangster films do not come under the horror classification. Universal Pictures, of Hollywood, who introduced Frankenstein to the screen has at present 26 horror films in Australia. One Sydney theatre today began a double feature programme consisting of horror revivals, “Night Monster, and “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.” No horror films were imported into Australia last week.
