AUSTRALIA’S CALL
DIVIDE PALESTINE U.S. PLAN CHALLENGED NEW YORK, April 22. Australia demanded today that the United Nations proceed immediately to . carry out the partitioning of Palestine. Challenging the United States proposal to discard partition in favour of a temporary trusteeship, Australia presented a resolution to the Assembly’s political committee that the Assembly '"'''direct the Palestine Commission as follows: ' 1. Proceed immediately with the creation of provisional councils of government for the Jewish and Arab - States, and the establishment of local militia forces, 2. Assume the civil administration in Palestine in co-operation with one or both provisional Governments after the termination of the British mandate on May 15. "3. Call on the Arab countries to prohibit'their nationals from participating .in the Palestine fighting, designed to ;r obstruct the carrying out of partition. J " 4. Call on the United Nations’ mem- “ bers to refrain from furnishing aid or encouragement to either community in ' Palestine which is acting without the Palestine Commission’s sanction. M. M. Alexandra Parodi, France, proposed that top priority be given to safeguarding Jerusalem and its holy places. He urged that the trusteeship council be authorised to begin consultations immediately on the recruiting of an emergency police force for Palestine.
