MONDAY HOLIDAY
CROCERS IN GISBORNE NO VARIATION OF AWARD Grocers shops in Gisborne will close on Monday, observing a holiday in lieu of Anzac Day. No change in the decision advertised earlier has been made by the Master Grocers’ Association, in view of the express conditions of the grocers assistants’ award. Master grocers in this district were all in favour of opening their shops on Monday, stated Mr. W. Denham Tarr, secretary to the association, when the recommendation of the president of the New Zealand Federation of Master Grocers was referred to him. They had raised the question both with the Labour Department and with the union members, but had found both parties definitely opposed to any variation of the award.
“We were informed by officers of the Employment and Labour Department that if any grocers’ shops, opened in contravention of the terms of the award action would be taken against the proprietors,” said Mr. Tarr. “Union rpembers also opposed any variation of the award conditions, and the Master Grocers’ Association had no alternative but to advertise the holiday on Monday.”
