OPENING OF SUB-UNIONS’ COMPETITIONS

DISTRICT RUGBY P.B. HAS 32 TEAMS FIELD GOAL 3 POINTS SOCCER & HOCKEY SERIES The three P.B. Rugby sub-unions Waikohu, Ngatapa and Motu and two of the East Coast sub-unions, Ruatoria and Matakaoa, open the season’s competitions tomorrow. Elsewhere in the two unions and also in the Wairoa (Hawke's Bay) sub-union, the second series of matches are to be played, while soccer and hockey teams will also continue their respective competitions. The grandstand ground on the Gisborne Oval has been allotted to Celtic and H. 5.0.8., winning senior fifteens in the opening games, Celtic having beaten Old Boys, 15-6 and H. 5.0.8. having accounted for Marist, 28-3. On their display of last week against last year’s champions, Celtic will be favoured for tomorrow’s encounter, but will be fully extended by the hardrucking H. 5.0.8. pack and smart rearguard which has been strengthened since last season. Union, who drew the bye last week, but had a beneficial run in the 15-all game with Puha (Waikohu), tomorrow face Marist. On opening-day form this game should be another very even contest and the initial effort in the competition of the new Union side will be watched with particular interest. The nomination in the fifth grade of an additional team from the Gisborne Intermediate School makes seven in that division and a total of 32 in the competitions of the P.B. union. As announced by the secretary, Mr. W. S. McKee, at Monday’s meeting of the management committee when the first list presented showed six in the fifth grade with a total of 31 over all divisions, the nominations this season are the highest in the history of the union. The total of teams at the opening of last season was 28. In accordance with the communication received by the P.B. union from the N.Z. Rugby Union the new allocation of three points instead of four for a field goal comes into operation this week. Official advice of the change has been received by the referees’ association.
