POOR VISIBILITY

BRIDGE INTERSECTION COURT CASE DISMISSED Evidence relating to the poor visibility for motorists approaching the intersection of Kaiti esplanade and the Gladstone road bridge was given in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court yesterday when John Charles Beecher (Mr. K. Gillanders Scott), was charged with failing to give way, when approaching an intersection to a vehicle on his right. He pleaded not guilty. The information was dismissed by Mr. E. L. Walton. S.M. The borough traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell, who prosecuted, said that he was proceeding across the bridge at about 8 p.m. on February 15. He was driving a small car and at the Kaiti esplanade intersection had to apply his brakes and swerve violently to avoid a collision with the defendant’s car, which was turning from the esplanade on to the bridge. He referred to the poor visibility for motorists at the corner. In evidence, Beecher, a garage proprietor, said he stopped and waited for the other car to pass in front of him. It, however, appeared to stall and as it had stopped he continued across the intersection, thinking he had been given the right of way. Mr. Scott contended there was no breach of the regulations as they required failure to stop and Beecher had actually stopped. In dismissing the information the magistrate said ho knew the visibility at the corner was poor.
