RENTS AND PRICES
CHOICE FOR PUBLIC PENDING REFERENDUM AUSTRALIANS ADVISED 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 22. The choice before the public at the coming referendum was whether they wanted a Socialist Australia controlled from Canberra or a democratic Australia in which individuals had a real chance, said the leader of the Federal Opposition, Mr. R. G. Menzies. He was opening the Liberal campaign, urging a negative vote at the referendum by which the Government will seek the assent of the people to Federal control of rents and prices. Mr. Menzies said that power to control rents, prices and charges normally resided with the States, but that the Commonwealth had been given wartime control and was now making a grab for permanent power. If the recent banking legislation was held to be valid, the Federal Government, with unlimited power over rents, prices and charges would be in complete control of Australian production, distribution and exchange. “The Socialist of Australia believes that the ultimate end to be achieved is a state of affairs where the Government is universal master and employer,’’ he added.
