COMMUNIST ACTIVITIES LIBERAL PARTY MOVE MELBOURNE, April 21. The annual conference of the Victorian Liberal Party called on the State Government to set up a Royal commission to investigate Communism and to ban the Communist Party if it were proved to be seditious. The delegates also urged the Government to check on Communists in State Departments and to break their grip on key unions by enforcing secret ballots for the election of officers. The State Government was asked to start a drive against Communists because “the Commonwealth Socialist Government is unable and unwilling to take action.” A small group opposed the ban because of the fear that democratic principles might be violated. Both parties comprising the Victorian Government have now declared themselves strongly in favour of immediate positive action to oust Communists from control of commerce and industry.
