NURSES’ HOUSING

COAST TOWNSHIPS ESSENTIAL REPAIRS TOKOMARU BAY : TIKITIKI (S.R.) TE PUIA, April 20. District nurses' cottages controlled by the Waiapu Hospital Board were 'he subject of two letters received ‘Torn the Health Department at the monthly meeting of the board held on Monday. The fiist dealt with the cottage at Tokomaru Bay, which, due to ground movement, had been adversely reported on by the Works Department, the board having been instructed to carry out no further work on this building, “The Health Department will provide alternative accommodation for the nurse,” said the letter. In moving that the department be written to asking for permission to carry out essential work on the Tokomaru cottage, Mr. H. Dudlield expressed the opinion that it would be probably some time before a new cot tage could bi built and if the nurse was to continue to occupy the existing cottage the very least the board could do was to maintain it in good repair. “District nurses are worthy of every comfort and convenience the board can provide,” concluded Mr. Dudlield. Mr. S. McCosh seconded the motion. Authority for Smaller Work Tne nurse would like to stay on at the cottage, said Miss Beale. It was convenient and as her work involved answering the phone and going out on call at all hours of the night and day this routine would be upset if the nurse was boarded in a private home. “Surely the Health Department only means major things when it states that no further work is to be carried out on the cottage," remarked Mr, P. G. Burton, “I’m sure we have authority to do the smaller work." “This motion will produce something definite, I hope,” said the chairman, Mr. V. G. H. Rickard, in putting the motion which was carried. Necessary repairs to the Tikitiki cottage formed the subject of the other letter from the department. The chairman explained that £7OO was provided on this year’s estimates for the purpose of renovating and making improvements to nurse’s cottage. Shortages of labour and materials were retarding this work, which would be carried out at the first opportunity.
