MOTHER STRUCK
SON SENT TO PRISON COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE "It is a shocking state of affairs when a son attacks his mother,” said the magistrate. Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Gisborne Police Court this morning when sentencing Elmore Cuthbert Verry, aged 29, labourer, to one month’s imprisonment at Napier. Verry was charged with assaulting his 64-year-old mother, Mrs. Laura Olive Verry, by striking her with his clenched fist at Gisborne on March 2. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant G. S. Norris stated that Verry, who lived with his mother and other members of the family, returned home under the influence of liquor on March 2. Following a n argument between Verry and his mother he struck her. Later Mrs. Verry was admitted to hospital suffering' from shock, bruises, two black eves and abrasions. She was still in hospital. “The assault was of a rather serious nature,” concluded the senior-sergeant. Verry had not been before the court previously on a similar charge, but had three other convictions. Verrv stated he was sorry for what he had done, which had been caused by having too much to drink.
