UNIONS IN POLITICS
IMPORTANT U.S. ISSUE (11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 16. The Federal District Court ruled today that the ban under the Taft-Hartley Act on political spending by labour unions is unconstitutional. Judge Ben Moore dismissed an indictment obtained by the Justice Department which charged the C. 1.0. and its president, Mr. P. Murray, with deliberate' violation of the bah. Murray had written the endorsement for Mr. Edward Garmatz, Democratic candidate for Congress in Baltimore. The issue is important because it will govern the degrees of participation of the unions in the 1948 election campaign. The Justice Department has announced that it will appeal promptly to the Supreme Court against the District Court’s decision.
