£12,800 MELBOURNE CUP
AGAIN RICHEST RACE V.R.C. RAISES STAKES (10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, MarchlG. The 1948 Melbourne Cup will be worth £12,500 with a gold cup valued at £3OO, making it again the richest in Australia and New Zealand. This decision was made by the Victoria Racing Club committee today. The last Auckland Cup, which was forth £10,300, had surpassed the Melbourne Cup as the richest race. The new Cup stakes will be £8750 and cup to the winner, £2500 for second and £1250 for third. The highest prizes ever given on the Melbourne Cup were for the cup won by Bitalli in 1923 when the sweepstakes boosted the prize to £13,288, the winner’s share being £10,288. Windbag’s Cup carried stakes of £13,215 and Phar Lap’s £12,429.
