CLEAN SWEEP

SCULLING HONOURS POVERTY BAY TROPHIES WON NINE RACES IN 10 Oarsmen of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club gave an outstanding exhibition and made a clean sweep of the sculling regatta held on the Wairoa River on Saturday, under the auspices of the East Coast Rowing Association, winning both the Colley and Kirk Shield for double-sculling and the Wayne Varley Memorial Shield for single-sculling. The Wairoa club was the only other contestant to score points in the competitions, taking one race in the doublesculling series. Weather conditions were poor for spectators but satisfactory for the oarsmen, who found the rain flattening out the normal chop on the river course and made for excellent sculling, with not much variation as between one side of the river and the other. Napier did not sent representatives to this regatta, owing to its difficulty in finding suitable craft, and competition was confined to the Poverty Bay, Wairoa and Gisborne clubs in all events.
