FLAX ON ST. HELENA
NEW ZEALAND ADVISER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 12. New Zealand's connections with the British island of St. Helena. 1200 miles from the west coast of Africa, are recalled by the announcement that Mr. E. W. Sutton, stripping mill superintendent for New Zealand Woolpack and Textiles, Limited. Foxton, has been invited by the colonial office to visit the island as a n adviser to the phormium tenax (New Zealand flax) industry established there. He will sail by the Arawa on Tuesday
In 1002 the Government of the island considered the milling of New Zealand flax, first introduced to the island in 1840, and Mr. C. Fulton, later to become the first hemp grader In New Zealand, visited St. Helena in that year in an advisory capacity, following’ which the Government there sponsored the mill which proved to be the beginning of what is now the main industry of the island.
There is an area of 3347 acres carrying phormium tenax with nine stripping mills. The production is approximately 100 tons of fibre for export.
