VIRTUALLY FINISHED
FRESH MEAT SUPPLIES CHRISTCHURCH STOCKS (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. March 11. Stocks of fresh meat held by butchers were virtually finished in most city shops by this afternoon and the position appears to be that only those customers who have ordered ahead will get meat tomorrow. It will not be a case of the usual week-end order. However, one butcher was taking orders this morning for joints of corned beef for delivery tomorrow. He had no other meat available save livers, kidneys, and similar lines delivered by the freezing works. One shop had a few sausages this morning and these quickly disappeared. With the smaller suburban butcheries the last orders were supplied yesterday, and customers will get no more meat. Grocers and delicatessens reported a run on tinned meats, luncheon sausage, and similar lines.
The general opinion among the trade today seemed to be that at the conference arranged for Monday a decision would be made to resume buying. If this decision were taken, said one butcher, it would mean that stocks would be available from Tuesday as the butchers would then be free to buy from, the freezing works, carrying on in this way until the stock bought at the Addington sale on Wednesday came in on Thursday.
