CAUGHT BY NEEDLES

WORKMAN’S ORDEAL RESCUERS ASSISTED SYDNEY, Feb. 24. Edward Martin, 32, of Yelbert street, St. Peters, Sydney, a foreman at the Australian Spinning Mills, Euston road, Alexandria, helped ambulance officers and engineers to dismantle a machine containing hundreds of needles which had trapped him. Martin was attempting to repair the machine when the top descended and the needles passed through his hand. The machine jammed, and his mates were unable to release him. Central District Ambulance was called, and ordered engineers to dismantle the machine while they took care of Martin. For half an hour the engineers worked and Martin tried to help them with his free left hand. Then the top was forced off the machine. The hand was released but the ambulance men were unable to remove a bar and some of the needles from it. This was done by doctors at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The hand may be amputated later, but Martin's condition is not critical.
