GUEST IN NANKING

FORMER JAP. GENERAL NANKING, March 12. General Yasutsugu Okamura, formerly commander-in-chief of the Japanese armies in North China during the war, is a guest of the Chinese Government at Nanking. No member of the Government will discuss his status or the reason for his presence. One guess is that Okamura is employed in an attempt to keep Japanese forces still on the loose in north-western Manchuria and in Kirin Province from going over to the Communists.

It is estimated that about 225,000 troops of the former Japanese garrison in Manchuria remaind unaccounted for. Chinese Communists say that Okamura is retained by the National Government as a military adviser.
