RELIEF CAME AT CRITICAL STAGE
“The week-end rain brought relief at a critical stage in the Gisborne Borough Council’s struggle to keep the supply going, and averted once more the necessity of resorting to the AYaipaon River,” commented the Mayor, Mr. N. IT. Bulb today. *‘ T Olinlr I.f 1,, f n ~
“I think we can fee! perfectly safe for the remainder of this season, and it is more than likely that March, 1948. will be (he last month in which Gisborne will have to worry about tile amplitude of its water supply for a generation at least.
"The storage of about 40.000,000 gallons in the Mangapoike dam just carried us through this season, one of the driest ever recorded. There is no doubt that when the dam is full, and holding a reserve of 200,000 000 gallons, we shall be able to face the longest drought with assurance.
“The council hopes that the last has been heard of . the possibility of using Waipaoa River water under any circumstances for town reticulation. It opes, too, that there will be no further cause for anxiety on the part of the consumers.
For myself and for members of the council, I desire to express thanks to the general public for the forbearance it ha s shown during a period of extreme difficulty.”
