ARMY BOXING TITLES
CONTESTS IN JAPAN CHOFU, March 12. Although the number of entries for the Second N.Z.E.F. amateur boxing championships were disappointing, considering the size of the force, the finals at Chofu were marked by fast and interesting bouts, and the general standard was good. The heavyweight bout provided the most decisive victory of the evening when B. M. Poananga (2nd Battalion), Palmerston North, gave a marvellous display of orthodox boxing to dispose of R. Davidson (A.S.C.), Whangarei, in a knock-out in the first round. D. Fairweather (Headquarters), Invercargill, bore up exceptionally well against a fast opponent, Scanlon, a sturdy Samoan of the 2nd Battalion in the rruiserweight class. In the final Scanlon met another hard-hitting Samoan of almost identical build. J. H. Kerrigan, who had won an earlier bout with a knock-out in the first two minutes. Scanlon got a points decision. No opponents could be found in the lightweight class for L. IV. Madden (.Headquarters), Auckland). The prizes were presented by Lieut. Colonel J. A. Worsnop, who remarked on the fine standard of the bouts. Trophy winners were: Heavyweight, B. M. Poananga (2nd Battalion); cruiserweight, S. Scanlon (2nd Battalion'; welterweight, R. G. Thompson (3rd Battalion); middleweight, senior. D. F. C. Murray (3rd Battalion), Wanganui; middleweight junior. R. Montgomery (2nd Battalion), Wellington; lightweight, L. W. Madden .(Headquarters). Auckland; featherweight, D. W. Weber (A.E.S.), Bunnythorpe.
