CHEESE PLANT BURNED

WHEY USED TO FIGHT FIRE The Cambridge Co-operative Dairy Company’s six-vat cheese factory at Pukeroro was, with its plant and machinery, destroyed by fire on Thursday morning. The fire was first noticed shortly before 6 o’clock when the factory was well enveloped in flames. The Cambridge Fire Brigade was called but the suction leads of the booster pumps could not be connected with the water supply. The contents of the whey tanks were used and the fire was attacked by this means until the whey blocked the hose. Settlers saved a small quantity of cheese, but one day’s output of about 20 cheeses was lost. The factory and plant were insured in the South British office for £4920.
