VETERANS GATHER

COMRADES’ TRIBUTE LATE MR. P. BRADY A tribute paid bv the Gisborne members of the South African War Veterans' Association, at their quarterly meeting held recently, to the memory of the late Mr. Patrick Bradv had a sequel in the presentation of a publication now decidedly scarce and of particularly keen interest to members of the association. The presentation was in the lorm of a copy of Lord Ranfurly’s publication, comprising a revised roll of honour of "Defenders of the Empire” covering the period 1840 to 1902 and naming all the men who had served in New Zealand, or had resided here after Empire service in other lands. , „„ „ Mr J. Brady, son of the late Mr. P. Brady and himself a veteran of World War ’ll tendered the book to the association on behalf of Mrs. Brady and members of the family. The chairman, Mr. J. Hurrey, expressed appreciation of the book and also of the acknowledgement by Mr. J. Bradv, of the comradeship with which all South African veterans and R.S.A. members had regarded his father. The two delegates to the Dominion conference held in Dunedin, Messrs. G. B. Carter and I. Lyndon, gave a full report on the various remits submitted, particularly those dealing with pensions, and ‘stated that an officer of the Social Security Department had attended the conference and explained a number of points which were puzzling members. x A remit from this district dealing with veterans’ homes was submitted and after a great deal of discussion it was resolved that the Dominion association should fully support the N.Z.R.S.A. in its endeavour to have the number oi veterans' homes increased from one, which is in Auckland, to one in each of the four centres and to secure increased support financially from the Government for this purpose.

The secretary, Mr. G. B. Carter, reported that the art union was progressing fairly well and that by the closing date the association should be pleased with the final result.

He also pointed out that as Anzac Day falls on a Sunday this year, the Gisborne R.S.A. may find it necessary to make some slight alterations in the programme, but that full information would be published in good time by that organisation. In any case, through the courtesy of Mrs. Menzies, the usual lunch for South African veterans would be held at the Bon Accord, and he hoped that with the increased membersip there would be a good muster for both ilie parade and lunch.
