LABOUR PARTY FUNDS
DISCLOSURE DEMANDED HOBART, March 12. The Legislative Council has demanded that the cash books of the State Labour Party’s secret fund be tabled in the Council. Mr. W. G. Webb, who moved the tabling of the books which were produced in evidence at the recent Royal Commission, said he had certain information and desired to see the books to substantiate it.
Government members violently opposed the motion on the grounds that the Court had acquitted the Premier, Mr, R. Cosgrove, of bribery, corruption and conspiracy and that the matter should be dropped. The motion was carried by 11 votes to 5. The Council rejected by 13 to 2 a move to veto all Government business until an election was held.
FRENCH STRIKE SPREADS.— Strikes which began a few days ago in the nationalised mines of the Pas de Calais and Nord departments now involve 30,000 miners. The strikers say that they are seeking “higher pay or lower prices.”
