OVER 100 SHEEP LOST
FELL INTO KARAPIRO LAKE Over 100 sheep, part of a large flock from Hawke’s Bay, which was being driven from Putaruru to Cambridge, fell into the Karapiro Lake and were drowned. The sheep were thirsty, and when they approached the lake a number of the 1000 sheep in the flock made for the water. On the slope to the lake level the leaders were pushed forward by those behind.
It is estimated that. 350 fell into the lake, and of these 106 were drownedMany were rescued by the crew of a Works Department launch which came on the scene early. Several truck drivers assisted the drover and the crew of the launch to drag the sheep ashore.
