OBITUARY
MR. G. E. ASHTON Word has been received in Gisborne of the death in Auckland of Mr. G. E. Ashton, formerly well-known in this district and latterly resident for the past 23 years in the northern city. Mr. Ashton was born in New Zealand and entered the employ of Messrs. L. D Nathan and Company, Limited, as a young man. He was transferred to the management of the firm's Gisborne branch at a time when several warehouses were active in the East Coast area.
When the branch was closed Mr. Ashton decided to remain in Gisborne, securing an appointment as manager ol the Gisborne Wine and Spirit Company, Limited, and later still taking up the management of the Cosmopolitan Club.
He was associated with a number of business enterprises in the district at various times, and was highly regarded for his business ability. He served two terms as a member of the Gisborne Borough Council. In 1925 Mr. Ashton returned to Auckland to live, and he continued working until past his seventieth year. He had been ailing lately, but was still able to get about until he suffered a seizure a . few days ago.
He is survived by Mrs. Ashton, formerly Miss Hilda Austin. Auckland, and four daughters and one son. The family comnrises Mrs. L. C. D. Harries. Gisborne. Miss Marjorie Ashton, Auckland. Mrs N. Morton, Paoamoa. Mrs. .1. Hart, Pukekohe, and Mr. Graham Ashton. Wellington. One son, Mr. Bruce Ashton, was killed in action in Pm Middle East in the Second World War.
