GARBAGE COLLECTION

Si/. —Mr. W. C. Kohn wants to have about 1200 collectors instead of the few we now have. The man who collects rubbish in Stout street takes less than five minutes per house and that is not a long job. Of course when his conveyance is loaded he has about two miles to take it lo be emptied. In Stout street there are many householders over 70 and 80 and some 90 years of age. Some are in feeble health, and yet Mr. Kohn proposes that these old people should not only pay their heavy rates, but struggle witn their rubbish tins. I am of the opinion that the present system of one man per cart and horse is cheaper and better than ihe men on the lorry would be. The milk at the front gate is trouble enough. FRANCIS STAFFORD. Sir.—Surely when Mr. Kohn brought up the idea of ratepayers bringing their rubbish tins to the front gate he could never have given a thought to aged people. This is the second time it has come before the council. Now, they speak of motor service. Do.es that not make up for lost time? If the idea is carried, then it means “burn everything and buy nothing in a tin or bottle.” I, and many others have no assistance. Would any councillor aged 74 carry my rubbish tin to the street? I fear not. Whatever he would do, lie could never be “A LONE, ELDERLY, WIDOW.”
