MOTORISTS FINED

TRAFFIC OFFENCES GISBORNfi PROSECUTIONS A number of motorists who had been caught by the Transport Department’s traffic inspector, Mr R. Metcalfe, appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton. S.M. in the Magistrate’s Court at Gisborne yesterday. Albert Ernest Hitchings pleaded guilty to a charge of exceeding the speed limit of 30 miles per hour in the borough, whilst riding a motor cycle on October 8 and also of having no driver’s license. He was fined £2 and costs on the first count and 5s and costs on the second. Hitchings explained that he was hurrying to reach a shop while it was still open when the inspector caught him. He had been at Waihau Bay for some time and had no opportunity of obtaining a driver’s licenses. Rodney Marshal Pitcher, who did not appear, was also fined £2 and costs 10s for exceeding 30 miles per hour whilst' driving a vehicle in the Gisborne borough.

Defendant's speedometer had been at fault but had now been adjusted, said Mr. Dawson Chrisp, who appeared for Thomas Henry Murtagh. who was also charged with exceeding 30 miles per hour in a vehicle in the borough. Fie was fined £2 and costs.

For having no rear vision fitted to his truck Kenneth Maurice Evans, was fined 10s and costs 10s. Alfred Wilkins, who was found by the inspector to have no adequate footrests on his motor cycle for a pillion rider whom he was carrying, was fined £1 and costs.

A fine of £2 and costs was imposed On Patrick George Sushamcs for exceeding 30 miles per hour in a vehicle within the Gisborne borough. For having no warrant of fitness he was fined 10s and costs. ■

For operating a heavy motor vehicle carrying a heavier load than was authorised, Pollards Delivery Service Limited was fined 30s and costs 10s. Tiie gross weight of the truck was Tton 14cwt. and it was licensed only for six tons, said the inspector. A letter was placed before the magistrate stating that the load was carried at the instigation of the Public Works Department.

Coutts and Jameson, Limited were fined £1 and costs 10s for failing to carry in their truck a goods service authority issued with the license.
