CHEAP DISMISSAL

SOUTHLAND OUT 78 WICKET AIDS FIJIANS MATCH SPOILED BY RAIN (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, March 11. A wet wicket and a heavy outfield ruined the possibility of spectacular cricket in the opening day's play of the game between the Fijians and Southland.

When play began at 3 p.m. the weather was fine but the wicket was actually unfit for play. Because of the public interest and the willingness of the Fijians it was decided to start the match. Southland batted first and were dismissed after 135 minutes for a total of 78. None of the fast Fijian bowlers was used, the wicket being made to :xler for the spinners and swingers. Fenn and E. Cakobau had no difficulty in going through the Southland team. Compensations were the Fijians' brilliant catching and returns to the wickets, and the smart play of Petero Kubu. second string wicketkeeper. With about 20 minutes left Fiji opened their innings and scored 11 without loss. The game will be continued today and if necessary for two hours on Friday.
