SERIOUS MENACE

DENTAL DISEASE IN N.Z. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 26. Dental disease in New Zealand is a far more serious menace to the health of the nation .than any of the more spcctacuiar diseases such as infantile paralysis, said Professor J. P. Walsh, dean of the Dental School, Otago, yesterday, when distributing certificates and medallions lo 43 dental nurse graduates.

He added that it would be possible to prevent at least 75 per cent, of the dental caries in New Zealand if what was already known about the disease could be put into effect. Sir Thomas Hunter, founder of the school dental service, said stupid dietetic habits were the root causes of the caries trouble. He agreed with Professor Walsh that children could bo brought up to eat the right foods. “Our food, lor instance, our bread, is too refined and concentrated,” said Sir Thomas Hunter. “People today live to eat, instead of eating to live.”
