Deep-Sea Fishing Launch Sinks

The 35ft. launch Renuhau, owned by Mr J. Barney, was lost late on Thursday afternoon when a submerged reef <vJr struck near Mayor \sland. A party . f five on a deep-sea fishing excursion -'■td a crew of two, who had barely left •be launch before it sank, were rescued fcam the sea shortly afterwards. The launch hit the Tuhua Reef about a mile and a half due east of South-East Bey. Mr. Barney was asleep at the time on i when the launch struck he quickly distributed lifebelts to the members of the party. He estimates that the launch sank within six minutes. Before he left the cabin the water was up to his arm pits. It is thought the vessel had settled in about 20ft of water. Because of the hazards to shipoing presented by submerged rocks, it is stated that no hopes are held that the launch can be salvaged.
