CARGOES ACCUMULATE
DANGER OF CONGESTION PROBLEM AT AUCKLAND CP.A.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. A warning that the port of Auckland will face a major transport problem if warehouses do not make arrangements to lift cargo from the wharf over the holiday period is given by Mr. G J. Brown, chairman of the Cargo Control Committee recently established by the Government with wide powers to ensure the smooth movements of shipments.
If merchants observe the ordinary holidays, warehouses will be closed from December 24 until about Januivy 12, a total of 18 days. The waterside workers will be absent only on seven days and four half-days, including Saturdays and • Sundays, during this period
An exceptionally large tonnage of imports, the last shipments of the 1947 licensing year, is arriving in the next fevv weeks to provide an unprecedented complication to the holiday problem. Although the Cargo Control Committee will have more off-the-wharf storage space under its jurisdiction than during the war Mr.' Brown considers that if warehouses are not opened the stores will be swamped by 35.000 tons that the full gangs working all the ships could land each week.
