SAVED FROM SURF
EMINENT AUSTRALIANS RESCUED ON ONE LINE SYDNEY, Dec. 15. * Life-savers at Palm Beach, 30 miles north of Sydney, had a notable “catch” when they rescued Mr. P. C. Spender, a member of the House of Representatives, and Captain H. L. Howden, senior officer in charge of the Fremantle Naval Base, on one line. Captain Howden was carried away in treacherous surf and Mr. Spender went to his assistance but was ’ soon himself in difficulties.
The beltman reached Mr. Spender first but Mr. Spender told him to go after Captain Howden who was much further out. While the beltman after a hard swim succeeded in rescuing Captain Howden Mr. Spender managed to struggle to an isolated sandbank from which he was picked up. Captain Howden was seriously affected by his experience, but slowly recovered after artificial respiration had been applied. __
