DEMAND FOR POULTRY
BLACKMARKET ACTIVE STRICTER CONTROL URGED (10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 15. The Food Minister, Mr. J. Strachey, is considering the Federation of Meat Traders’ plea to end price control on home-produced poultry to beat blackmarketeers. The federation’s general secretary, Mr. A. J. Jackson, estimated that 80 per cent, of British poultry, turkeys and rabbits were sold on the blackmarket. He added that blackmarketeers paid £1 for poultry and over 10s a pound for turkeys. Mr. Jackson says the removal of controls would ensure that the public and not the blackmarket got food though the traders’ price would be higher than the controlled price. The Food Ministry said 1074 tons of turkeys has arrived from. Australia. Christmas is in the air at Convent Gardens with the arrival of Jaffa oranges and grape fruit. Christmas trees are selling at 30d a foot and holly at 6d to 9d a bunch.
The: police are out nightly using searchlights on cars hunting for turkey thieves. They set traps on all the main roads, stopped motorists, and checked their identity cards and petrol coupons during the week-end.
