AIRSTRIP STEEL FOR SILO SYDNEY, Nov. 26. Sufficient airstrip steel is available in Sydney to build 1000' farm silos capable of holding more than 1,000,000 bushels of bulk wheat. This was stated by officials of the Department of Agriculture who inspected the steel at a disposals dump near Sydney. Two men at the dump built the frame of a silo 10ft. high and 14 deep in diameter in two hours. They could have made it much larger, but limited the amount of metal used to one ton. The iron, which was brought down from the Solomon Islands recently, is in 10ft. strips, each 15 inches wide and about an eight of an inch thick. As it is fitted with locking lugs along each side, any number of pieces can be joined together and the only tool the builders used in putting the silo up was a hammer to bend the lugs over. As the metal carries 3in perforations for its full length, a lining of some waterproof material would be necessary to make it grain proof, said the i materials specialist of the department.
