GARDENING CIRCLE REPORT PRESENTED The annual meeting of th® Poverty Bay Gardening Circle was held at Low s reception rooms on Tnuisday, last, Mis R. P. Baigent presiding. On behalf of members, a sheaf of gladioli and delphiniums was presented to Mrs Baigent with expressions of appreciation of her work for the circle during the year. . Mrs W. H. James, secretary, and Mrs J. Johnstone, treasurer, also received handsome bouquets. The tea-hostesses, Mesdames F. Wickens and Geo. Jones were presented with posies and the Mesdames' R. Stephens and L. F. Williams with shoulder sprays. The retiring treasurer, Mrs J. Johnstone, was asked to accept a propelling pencil as a small token of appreciation of her Jong service in this capacity. A comprehensive survey of the year s achievements was given in the annual report presented bv the president. It stated that a total of 60 active members were enrolled with the circle with several on the waiting list. . Cut flower and decorative work competitions had been held at each meeting during the year and a gratifying percentage of members had competed or displayed flowers. The clubs’ community service towards civic .patriotic and charitable causes was demonstrated during the year when the circle carried out the decorating of the hall for Pioneers’ Day, made the presentation wreaths for Anzac Day and also arranged flowers for Lady Freyberg’s visit and decorated the Opera House stage for the reception to Viscount Montgomery and fdr the investiture. Presentation bouquets were also made for visiting artists at a recent concert. . , , The yearly garden competition had been successfully revived and the circle would continue the competition. The first chrysanthemum show to be held in Gisborne for 10 years was staged by the circle in aid of the Heni Materoa Home and was financially successful. Thanks were due to a long list of helpers, including speakers at monthly meetings, the press, office-bearers, judges, Mr Lowe and all who co-oper-ated in the activities of the circle. The report was adopted. Officers elected for the coming year were: President, Mrs R. P. Baigent, vice-presidepts, Mrs W. H. James and Mrs C. G. Crone; secretary Miss M. Walton; treasurer. Mrs T. Gresham; committee, Mesdames FI. Hanes, J. W. Owen, J, Johnstone, F. Williams, R. Stephens F. Middlebrook; strewards, cut flowers, Mrs H. Gilmer, decorative class. Mrs S. Richardson; librarian, Mrs F. Roberts. The December competitions resulted. —Cut flowers, carnations, 3 distinct colours: Mrs R. P. Baigent, 1; Mrs J. Jolly, 2; Mrs J. W. Owen, 3. Gladioli, medium decorative: Mrs F. Birkett, 1; Mrs Geo. Jones, 2; Mrs A. R. Mann, 3 Any other annual: Mrs Geo. Jones, 1; Mrs J. W. Owen, 2. Any other perennial: Mrs J. W. Owen, 1; Mrs J. R Read, 2; Mrs B Dodge, 3. Decorative classes, colourless glass vase of white flowers: Mrs B. Dodge, 1; Mrs R. P. Baigent, 2. Centrepiece of gladioli tips and florets: Miss M. Walton. Trophies for points gained during the year were won as follows: Cut flowers Evelyn Flossie Smith Memorial Rose Bowl won by Mrs J. W. Owen. Gardening circle trophy for runner-up, Mrs F. Birkett. Mrs A. Stoneham’s trophies for most points in decorative work, A section, Mrs R. Orehistqn; B section, Miss M. Walton.
