FILM CHIEF’S DEATH
HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 1. Ernst Lubitsch, well-known film producer and director, died at his home yesterday, He was 55. Lubitsch has been under medical care for a heart condition. Among the first films he produced in the United States was “Madame Du Barry,” starring Pola Negri, in 1918. Lubitsch gained a reputation for understanding players, and was credited with the American success of Maurice Chevalier, the rise of Jeanette MacDonald, and the discovery of comedy talents in Gary Cooper and Greta Garbo.
