AID FOR FARMERS

PRODUCTION DRIVE CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED NUHAKA LABOUR CORPS A labour corps will be formed in Nuhaka to assist at the week-ends with harvesting fertilising shearing and any other necessary work in the campaign to aid Britain This decision was reached at a general meeting in Nuhaka presided over by the Rev. N. Te Hau. Before the necessary committees were formed the chairman introduced to the gathering Mr T Hayes secretary to the Hawke’s Bay Aid-to-Britain Committee, who outlined the urgency of the task confronting the committee Extracts from letters from the Homeland were read to show how appreciative the recipients were of food parcels The latest reports stated that the food situation again had deteriorated, potatoes being rationed to the extent of 31b per week for an adult person and ljlb for children. The production committee decided that its main aim should be to increase production and it was then the formation of a labour corps came under discussion. A member of the gathering. Mr. P Taiapa, stated that he could make 17 men available for work during week-ends. No Sacrifice Considered Too Great Fat collections were discussed, together with methods of disposal and dispatch to England. A bulk parcel scheme was considered essential and the collection of funds through stock drives and donations of other forms was given thought. The attendance at the meeting was wholeheartedly behind the plans outlined and was unanimous in declaring that no effort should be spared and.no sacrifice too great to make in helping Britain in her hour of need. On Tuesday Mr Hayes visited the schools of the district and explained to the children the reasons why Britain required the assistance of all. He congratulated them on their splendid coupon-saving efforts in the past. The native school during the past two weeks had collected 16,437 meat coupons, valued at £225 6s 3d and coupons equivalent to 901 bof butter. The public school has been averaging 1000 meat coupons and 201 b of butter for some weeks, it was said. The total coupons collected each week in Nuhaka have been averaging 8000 meat and the equivalent of 501 b of butter, which Mr. Hayes described .as an effort of great credit to the district.
