BYRNES REBUFFS YUGOSLAVS
PROBE REFUSED
AFFAIRS CONDUCT TO GREECE (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter —Copyright.) (11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Sep. 29. The former Secretary of State, Mr. James Byrnes, declined today Yugoslavia’s invitation to investigate conditions in Yugoslavia, Mr. Byrnes telegraphed the Yugoslav Ambassador: “Certainly Yugpslavia’s conduct towards Greece constitutes a threat to the peace and is a matter for determination by the United Nations, of which both Yugoslavia and Greece are members. , Therefore, it is not a matter for unilateral action by the United States or for an investigation group of private citizens of the United States.”
Mr. Byrnes added that his acceptance might prejudice action by the United States- Therefore, he could not accept, but Marshal Tito’s willingness to permit an investigation and his stated anxiety to correct the present situation gave hope for the future. -
