OPENING PLAY
HEAVY PROGRAMME INDOOR BASKETBALL A heavy programme faced the 24 men and women’s teams who commenced play in the North Island indoor basketball tournament in Gisborne this morning. Play in the various sections will continue throughout the day, and section winners will play-off the semi-finals and the survivors the finals tonight.. Play progressed well up to timetable in both the Army Hall and the Y.M.C.A. this morning, the games attracting a large gallery in both halls. The first two teams commenced play at 8 a.m., while the last of the section games should be commenced shortly after 5 p.m. Thirty-six games will be played today. The semi-finals will begin at 6.30 p.m., and the final of the women’s section at 8.15 p.m., with the men’s final at 0 p.m. Both the Gisborne men and women’s teams won their early games by big margins. The men’s teams defeated Wairarapa by 19 points to 10, while the women had an even bigger margin, defeating Whangarei by 20 points to four. One of the surprises in the women’s section was the defeat of Hamilton by Wanganui. Results of play in the early stages of the tournament were: Men.—Gisborne 19 d. Wairarapa 10; Hamilton 30 d. Feilding 7; Wellington 21 d. ) Whangarei 4; Palmerston North 34 d. Hutt Valley IS; Auckland 26 d. Wanganui 11. Women.—Gisborne 20 d. Whangarei 4; Wanganui 16 d. Hamilton 11 ; Wellington 39 d. Dargaville 1; Auckland A 21 d. Feilding 12.
