TEA MAY BE 5/-

LIFTING OF SUBSIDY SUPPLY NOW ADEQUATE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 20. A rise in the price of tea from 4s 4d to at least 5s is expected by the New Zealand Wholesale Tea Packers’ Federation. In a statement the president, Mr. E. R. Toop, Wellington, said there had been recent minor difficulties of supply. With shipments landing now and expected before Christmas, the supply position was reasonably assured for the next six or seven months. There was no question of a shortage.

The lifting of the subsidy on tea would mean that everybody would have to pay more for it. Naturally, increased costs had to be passed on. Nor should it be forgotten that the tea trade had had no compensation for increased costs for a long time. If the price fixed for tea was a high one, it would have an effect on the quantity sold. It was expected that the new price would certainly not be less Hum 5s a wound retail.
