GRADED KIWIS

WAIT FOR SETTLEMENT

LAND JOBS RECOMMENDED

No action has been taken yet in Gisborne about Kiwi servicemen graded for farm settlement and awaiting the opportunity to go on the land on their own account, but not yet back in permanent association with the farming industry. A circular issued by the Rehabilitation Department early this month pointed out to graded men that it was in their own interests to take semipermanent employment on farms pending the time when they could be settled under rehabilitation schemes according to their grading.

The Minister of Rehabilitation, Mr. C. F. Skinner, pointed out that sonie men who had satisfied the farm grading committees of their capacity to take over properties under departmental settlement schemes might have to wait some time yet before they could hope to secure sections of their own. Those who were keeping their hands in by regular farm work would not be handicapped in taking up land on their own account; but those who were not working at farming might find themselves at a disadvantage. It was pointed out in answer to the inquiries in Gisborne that the time eiven for compliance with the Rehabilitation board’s direction—one month — had not.yet expired, and that in any case action on the circular would rest with the farm-grading committees.
