GISBORNE FLATS
AREA OF 45,756 ACRES
Gisborne's alluvial flat land extends over 45,758 acres, and that figure includes ail the re-entrants in tire fertile valleys leading into the higher back country.
The figure of 39,000-odd acres quoted recently has promoted discussion among farmers of the district.. It was found, when inquiries were made at the Lands and Survey Department, Gisborne, that 39.705 acres is the extent of the flats exclusive of the Te Karaka area.. I( was estimated that there would be 0000 acres in the Tc Karaka district.
On a map in the department's office, showing the extent of the fiat land from the Bay to a line just short of Te Karaka, statistical information in the legend shows that the Waiapaoa River almost equally divides the flats. On the east of the river to the line short of Te Karaka there are 20,610 acres and to the west of .the river line 19,140.
