WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) Statins that further inquiries had to be made, Constable E. A. Dunn applied for a remand when John Whnatiga, aged 19, Maori labourer, appeared before Messrs. V. E. Winter and A. Archibald, J.Ps., in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday, charged with the theft of a camera and a claw hammer, of a total value of £5 17s 6d. the property of Charles Richard Ogden. The accused was remanded to appear at Wairoa on September 19. It was reported by the Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. C V. Chamberlain, at this week's meeting of the Wairoa Borough Council that no advice had been received to date of the movements of the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freylierg, V.C., during his forthcoming visit to Wairoa. Mr Chamberlain said a meeting of the council would be called when notification of the visit of the Governor-General was' received. Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, Mayor of Wairoa. has not yet decided whether he will again be a candidate for the mayoralty at the local body elections, but present indications are that lie will. Messrs. D. H. Withers and M. J. Gemmeil will probably not offer themselves for re-election to the council, hut the other six will most likely again offer their services. They are Messrs. W. H. Flint, J. Lawrence. J. Fitzgerald, M. B. Svensen, T. Swectman and W, Calder.
