CONDITION SERIOUS NEW YORK. Sept. 17Mr. F. H. La Guardia, former Mayor of New York and Director-General of UNRRA, is critically ill after a collapse at his home. He is now in a corna. Mr. La Guardia, who is aged 65, dominated New York politics for more than a decade. One of the most colourful and versatile figures on the American scene, he was admitted to the Bar and elected to Congress before America's entry into the First World War. He commanded the American air forces on the Italo-Austrian front during the war. and then re-entered politics serving seven terms in Congress in all. Elected Mayor of New York in 1934. he became one of the city’s most beloved and energetic administrators, being popularly known as “The Little Flower.” He held office until 1945, and the next year took over the DirectorGeneralship of UNRRA. resigning that post last December.
