CITY OF LONDON PLAN.— An “aerial view” of the plan for the City of London as envisaged by consultants of the City of London Reconstruction, considered at the meeting of the Court of Common Council on May 22. Their report contains a number of far-reaching proposals, both for future control of building in the city and for improvements in its street-plan. It is recommended that the precinct of St. Paul’s (centre) be widened to the dimensions envisaged by Sir Christopher Wren. Lower left is the proposed Ludgate Square replacing present Ludgate Circus. Lower right, Blackfriars Bridge is to be scrapped and replaced by a new road bridge on the pillars of the present railway bridge. Parallel with the river Thames is Thames Street a through-road from Blackfriars to Tower Hill, with raised terraces for local traffic. (A.P. Photo)
