SINGLE COMMAND
INDIA & PAKISTAN ARMIES OPERATIVE TILL APRIL (10 a.m.) LONDON. Aug. 11. The Viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten, announced that the armed forces of India and Pakistan come under the single command of a joint Defence Council after the transfer of power on Friday, reports the British United Press correspondent in New Delhi. General Sir Claude Auchinleck, as commander
of the British forces in India, will be supreme commander of the two armies. The Viceroy will be chairman of council. The joint arrangement will lapse after April 1948 when the two Dominions’ forces will presumably function independently.
